How to Reduce Carton Damage When Importing from China: A Buyer Checklist

Carton damage is one of the most common problems buyers discover only after goods reach the warehouse. The unit may be correct, the supplier may have shipped on time, but weak export packing can still create refunds, rejected cartons and arguments over who should pay.

Before placing a repeat order, ask the supplier for three simple items: carton specification, inner packing photo and loading photo. For most export orders, the outer carton should be matched to product weight, stacking pressure and transport route. A carton that looks acceptable in a factory sample room may fail after sea freight, inland trucking and warehouse handling.

A practical pre-shipment packing check should include carton thickness, gross weight per carton, drop-test risk, moisture protection, corner protection and clear shipping marks. If the goods are fragile, request inner separators or custom foam rather than relying only on bubble wrap. If the goods are heavy, reduce units per carton instead of forcing the same packing plan to save small costs.

Buyers should also compare packing photos with the approved sample. Look for mixed carton sizes, unclear labels, exposed product surfaces and pallets without proper wrapping. These small signs often reveal rushed production or poor warehouse discipline.
